Adil used to act since his school days. When he was 18, he ran away from home to study philosophy at a college in Guwahati. He also used to do acting and stand up comedy in college. He also used to imitate many Bollywood actors. He worked as a stand up comedian for about 6 years.

Adil Hussain later became involved in mobile theater and Assamese cinema. After this, he studied from the National School of Drama, Delhi in the year 1990. She later received a Charles Wallace Trust Scholarship with the help of which she studied at the Drama Studio London. During and after his studies, he worked in art cinema as well as Bollywood films. He has also worked in many Hollywood films. Not only this, he has also worked in English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Norwegian and French films. Adil Hussain made his debut in Bengali films in the year 2004 with the Bengali film ‘Iti Srikant’. Soha Ali Khan was also with him in this film. Adil played the lead role in this.
