Pakistan: 6 people killed and around 50 injured as bus overturns in Punjab province
New Delhi: On Sunday, A overloaded high speed bus overturned in Punjab province of Pakistan. At least six people died and 50 others were injured in the accident. The bus was carrying Christian pilgrims for a religious gathering. The accident took place in Sheikhupura, about 50 kilometers from Lahore.
According to officials, the bus was carrying Christian pilgrims for a religious gathering at the National Marian Shrine in Mariamabad. The bus overturned at a turn in Dogran,Sheikhupura. Police and rescue officials reached the spot and took the injured to the hospital.
He said that six passengers died on the spot, while the condition of five is said to be critical. There were 60 passengers in the bus, more than its capacity. The driver lost control of the speeding vehicle while taking a turn.
Caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab Mohsin Naqvi expressed grief over the deaths in the accident and directed health officials to provide best treatment to the injured. The National Marian Shrine in Mariamabad has been the site of an annual pilgrimage to the Nativity of Mary since 1949. Mariamabad is also known as ‘Mary City’.
Road accidents are common in Pakistan. In August, 18 people were killed and 16 others were injured when a passenger bus caught fire after colliding with a pick-up van carrying a fuel tank in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
