North Korea Unveils Its Inaugural “Tactical Nuclear Attack Submarine”

North Korea Launches First “Tactical Nuclear Attack Submarine” to Strengthen Naval Force
North Korea has unveiled its inaugural “tactical nuclear attack submarine” in a bid to bolster its naval capabilities, according to state media reports. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the unveiling ceremony, where he emphasized the importance of nuclear weaponization for the Navy.
During the ceremony, Kim Jong Un stated that the submarine, named the Hero Kim Kun Ok and designated as No. 841, marked a significant milestone in enhancing North Korea’s naval capabilities. He emphasized that the submarine would serve as a core underwater offensive asset for the nation’s naval force.
Kim Jong Un further revealed plans to convert existing submarines into attack vessels equipped with nuclear weapons. He inspected the submarine as it prepared for a test cruise, familiarizing himself with its weapon system and underwater operational capabilities.
The launch event featured confetti and balloons, with Kim Jong Un stressing the strategic and tactical plans to modernize underwater and surface forces continually.
North Korea has conducted numerous weapons tests this year and recently failed in its attempt to launch a spy satellite into orbit. In response, South Korea and the United States have intensified their defense cooperation, conducting joint military exercises and naval drills.
According to the US-based think tank Nuclear Threat Initiative, North Korea possesses between 64 and 86 submarines, making it one of the world’s largest submarine fleets. However, doubts persist about the operational status of all these submarines due to their age.
The new submarine, while not revolutionary, adds complexity to North Korea’s nuclear threat, according to analysts. Kim Jong Un has consistently emphasized the importance of the Korean People’s Navy and has focused on enhancing its capabilities.
South Korea criticized North Korea’s submarine launch, accusing the country of prioritizing weapons development over addressing the living difficulties of its citizens.
